1. Acrylic Painting
We are going to be creating this acrylic painting. The subject matter is that of a dwarven ranger fighting an ogre shaman. The vines are entangling the ogre while the faithful animal companion, and the ranger attack.

2. First off
I began my drawing on 15 x 24 inch cold press illustration board. I then taped the borders using masking tape. Now regular masking tape will cause the illustration board to rip. So in order to prevent this I rubbed the tape on my pants to decrease some of the adhesive. Then I roughly sketched my image on to the board.

3. Some Shadows
I begin by taking black paint and lightly sketching in my darks. This gives you a background a base that you can start from. I always try to work from back to forward when painting. But sometimes it does not always happen. I am using a wide brush to create a bit of a gestural feeling.

4. The walls
I then work on the walls of the painting by putting over a base coat of the color that I am going to use. In this case I chose a blue green hue. The only reason I chose this is because if I would have chosen brown the colors would have blended too much together.

5. Finishing the walls
I then work texture into the walls by creating a light and shadow effect. I also work a bit more on the brickwork. I then take a bit of black and almost pencil in the line markings. I chose this to create a stylized piece.

6. The axe
I begin working on the axe. First I lay a gray coat of paint that i want to portray the blade. I then iron it out by taking a lighter grey and brushing in the highlights, and with a darker grey I work on the shadows. I then I work black in the drawing to create the etching on the blade.

7. The staff
The staff is done much like the axe. I lay down a brown, and then add the darks and lights as I see fit. If you notice that the staff is in the fore ground of the dwarf. The reason I did this is so that I would not have to mix the paint again.

8. Dwarven Face
I then work on the face. I do this by laying down three colors, red for the eyes and nose, yellow for the forehead, and blue for chin, Then I overlay a general skin tone, then I add the darks and highlights. I also worked on the gloves and axe handle.

9. Decoration
I work on the decoration of the staff. The bindings were a bit different. I overlayed a black and then I layed the lighter colors on top of it. The feathers I worked just by watering down the colors and creating a wash over it.

10. Helmet
Working on the helmet was a bit difficult for me, So I asked for advice. I wrote Todd Lockwood and asked him for tips. He told me that I should work bigger, Also he reprimanded me for something that I should have known. Work from reference. So Its a bit late fore this work of art, but I will finish this and work from reference on my next picture. I did the best I could with what I have. and we continue on.

11. Beards and Bracers
The bracers were very simple. I just overlayed a red wash and then I added my shadows. Then I layed down a flat black for the bindings. Then I put a design down on the forward bracer. The beard was done by working with a dry brush. I first painted the basic yellow and then started adding my darks. Then I took my brown color and dry brushed over it. I then added highlights.

12. Creature Effects
I worked on the skin of the creature by mixing blue, white and a small amount of black. I created a wash and then I began going over it with my highlights and darks.

13. Necklace
I painted a red design on the belly of the beast. I also began working on the bones and necklace of the ogre. Here once again I got frustrated with the size of the painting.

14. Vines
The vines, I used a base tone of brown, very simple but then I worked a bit of poinalism with lights and darks to simulate bark on the roots.

15. Badger
The badger was very difficult since there are no very good pictures of one attacking. So I had to try to fake it. I worked on the mouth first and then worked on the fur. After the paint has dried I worked a bit of pencil into the drawing to shade the fur.

16. Arms and finishing touches
I then worked on the arms. I put a light wash of skin tone over the over the already shaded arms. Then I put it tattoo in just a darker brown.
